In collaboration with UCLPartners, our Innovation Exchange aims to connect people working across the healthcare sector to share ideas, innovation solutions, projects and products, in order to improve patient care for residents of North East London.
The NHS and social care represent complex landscapes and can be daunting markets. However through the Innovation Exchange funded by the Office for Life Sciences, Care City is working closely with our East London health and care partners to identify common health and social care challenges and quickly bring people and organisations together to develop, test and spread high quality and high potential innovation.
The East London health and care ecosystem faces a number of challenges. Care City has worked closely with leaders across the geography to focus on a number of priority areas, which also align with the vision set out within NHS England’s Long Term Plan

- Ageing and Frailty Technology
- Dementia
- Mental Health
Care City’s work focusses on getting the best technology to patients, faster, to improve care and we facilitate that through:
- Working with partners to identify where technology can address key system challenges
- Finding the best technologies to address these problems
- Supporting innovators to be public sector ready
- Project management support for implementation and evaluation
- Sustainability planning, looking how to scale and share learning more widely.
Supporting innovation and businesses
Do you have an idea for a product, technology or service that could benefit patients and the NHS? Or does your company already have a product that is ready to launch into the health and care sector, or already on the market?
Our partners, UCLPartners team of in-house experts provide bespoke advice, signposting and support for innovators and businesses with products and technologies at all stages – from an initial idea to products already on the market that are ready to scale up. Our aim is to identify and support innovations with the most potential to benefit patients and the NHS.
Developing your innovation idea
If you have an earlier-stage idea for a product or service and need support to help develop your idea and get it ready for the marketplace, then we would encourage you to contact one of the organisations below which will be better placed to help you develop your idea into a product that is ready for market.

Care City (North East London Foundation Trust): Care City leads on the ‘New Care Models’ Work Stream, an undertaking which utilises the latest care technology to inform an adaptable, modernised, and high-quality health and social care infrastructure for Barking Riverside.
Innovate UK work with companies to de-risk, enable and support innovation. They can support you to connect with partners and investors that can help you to turn your idea into a commercially successful product.
Innovate UK also fund business and research collaborations.
MedCity facilitate and support collaboration across the life sciences sector, helping to turn innovations into commercial products and services.
MedCity can help you to understand the steps along the pathway to turn your innovation idea into a reality. They can help connect you with industry experts, support you to get your work into clinical trials and signpost you to appropriate funding opportunities.
The Innovation Unit can help you to identify and grow interest in your innovation through research, communications and engagement.
The Small Business Research Initiatives scheme (SBRI) aims to find solutions for identified healthcare problems.
It provides funding opportunities for companies developing solutions for specific health needs.
NHS England is responsible for steering the Healthy New Towns Programme nationally. They are working with ten housing developments (including Barking Riverside) across England to shape the health of communities, and to rethink how health and care services can be provided.
